![]() ![]() Or movies like Avatar where they just took Earth animals and changed them slightly (ooo, a jaguar with SIX LEGS! How alien!). Organisms like these are the reason I get so annoyed with all the 6ft tall bipedal SciFi aliens with two eyes, a nose and a mouth, etc etc. Siphonophores come in all sorts of crazy shapes and sizes, some theoretically have no limit on their size because their zooids link up together endlessly, while each siphonophore itself can chain together (like salps do) to create a super colony. Again, each zooid is an individual organism incapable of living on its own to make the full colonial organism we see floating through the ocean. There are the stinging zooids that make up the tentacles called dactylozooids, zooids responsible for digestion called gastrozooids, the zooid that makes up the float or sail is called a pneumatozooid and the sex related organisms are called gonozooids. They are colonial, so this Portuguese man o' war is not actually a single organism, but a colony of individual organisms called "zooids," each with a specialized function that renders them entirely dependent on each other. No central nervous system, no possiblity of any form of consciousness, even a primitive one. Really stretches the definition of what an "organism" is in so many ways. Generally speaking, you should not post pictures with sea life as the main focus. Sea life is permissible as long as it isn't the main focus of the content. If you’re posting something, ask yourself: Is it triggering my thalassophobia (fear of vast and/or deep bodies of water) or is it triggering a different sort of fear?
